Moving Course Evaluations Online: Maryland's Experience

Date:2/19/2009
Producer: OIT
Series:TLT Brown Bag

Length:
60 minutes

Course evaluations are a part of the process by which the University of Maryland seeks to improve teaching and learning. In April 2005, the University Senate approved the implementation of a standard, online, University-wide course evaluation instrument. In addition to deploying an online course evaluation system (CourseEvalUM), Maryland has chosen a two-tiered approach to addressing participation rates. Students have access to view the aggregate results of a sub-set of universal items online if they satisfy two criteria: (1) they completed all of their evaluations and (2) the individual course section had a 70% response rate. Ellen Borkowksi, Director of Academic Support in UM's Office of Information Technology, will share how and why her institution developed the CourseEvalUM system and the results they have seen to date.
